NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS

I have over 13 years of experience working with adults (21+) with mental health concerns. I work from a person-centered, strength-based, anti-oppressive, attachment-oriented and trauma-informed lens. I have extensive experience and training in providing trauma-focused treatment from my many years of supporting  individuals who have fled abusive relationships and/or have experienced childhood trauma.

My area of interest and speciality is in the treatment of depression, anxiety, panic disorders, bipolar disorder, and trauma and attachment wounds.

I am trained in various evidence-based modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy. My understanding of one’s psychological health is also influenced by psychodynamic and attachment theories.

I have a special interest in and lived experience in prenatal and postpartum support.  My professional training combined with my personal experience in areas of fertility treatments, neonatal loss and grief as well as being a proud mommy of a rainbow baby, has led to my more recent interest in supporting women who are seeking perinatal therapy.

My clients describe me as warm and easy to open up to. You can expect a non-judgmental space where we work at a pace that you feel ready for because therapy doesn’t have to feel intimidating.

Together we will work to achieve the changes you want for yourself, identify the root of the problems or symptoms you are facing, and you’ll learn more about yourself through the process.

I am grateful to have many years of experience working with adults and First Responders to process and overcome the far-reaching impacts of trauma on the mind and body. I have years of experience working with individuals who experienced trauma from historical childhood abuse, unhealthy relationships, sexual abuse and sexual assault.

Trauma can show up in many ways in the mind and body including anxiety, depression, nightmares, difficulty trusting others, among many other common symptoms. I use a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches that are trauma focused to support you in processing your experiences and reaching your goals for therapy whether you are looking for support as an individual or as a couple. I am Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) trained, and I draw from various other approaches including Internal Family Systems, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Somatic Experiencing and Emotion Focused Therapy. In my work with couples I draw upon trauma-informed modalities, including parts work,  as well as Gottman Method and Emotionally Focussed Therapy for couples.

Through such evidence-based therapeutic approaches I’ve observed significant shifts with people I’ve worked with. I have witnessed them become more empowered, self-compassionate, and calmer with a newly gained sense of peace when thinking of their past traumatic experiences.

Treatment Specialties: adult & childhood trauma, attachment wounds, domestic violence & safety planning, chronic suicidality, longstanding anxiety and depression, bereavement and loss, crisis and stress management, fertility, pre-and postnatal support, self-esteem and acceptance, assertiveness and boundary-setting, work-related stressors, emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

Mehwish Khan

Registered Social Worker / Psychotherapist

I have had the privilege of crossing paths with and providing clinical support to many children, adolescents, young adults and their families for over 12 years now. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care and a Master’s degree in Social Work. I am a trauma-focused therapist and I like to anchor my practice in bottom-up approaches, including polyvagal theory and somatic techniques. My work centers on deep healing with a particular focus on individuals, especially young women, presenting with complex trauma. I draw on my lived experiences as a spiritual being, as an immigrant who came to Canada as an adolescent, as well as my intersectional aspects of identity that include being a woman of colour who is a single parent and wears a hijab. Personally, my journey has been about engaging in all areas of my life by embodying my healing.

Being an intuitive and empathic individual, I offer deep emotional attunement to my clients during sessions and view it as the most valuable and sacred tenet of the therapeutic space. I am non- judgemental, strengths-based, and heart and person-centered in my approach.

Some of the modalities I use in my practice include Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST Level 1-Integration of Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness-based CBT, and Sensorimotor therapy), Somatic Embodiment, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) and Narrative Therapy. Hello, my name is Sara Iyamu, and I have 16 years working as a social worker with a diverse group of children, youth, adults and their families.

Utilizing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness, I work collaboratively with my clients to identify goals for treatment. Counselling can be both short or long term and I will provide you with a non-judgemental space to be yourself, self-reflect and increase self-awareness to help harness your confidence and inner strengths to achieve your goals.

I have a keen interest supporting youth and adults with emotional and mental health disorders. Through counselling we can address and peel away experiences of trauma, improve self-regulation, anger management, relational-conflict, and manage addictions.  I have a lot of experience working with individuals and their families with diagnoses of depression, anxiety, bi-polar, schizophrenia, self-harm and suicidality.

I practice from a non-judgmental, equity based- framework, using client centered therapy, and I recognize that one size does not fit all. I am flexible and work collaboratively to meet the unique needs of those I work with.
